Blurb and who’s who
Emotion has become a central component of our forms of online communication and sharing. With self-isolation, lockdowns, loss of work, and home immersion becoming our collective everyday culture in the age of the COVID-19 pandemic, online culture has become the new normal of para-social forms of emotional expression. Anxiety, fear and hate are coupled with aspirant desires to share affirming coping strategies, humour through memes, exhilaration through self-expression via dance, singing and pets. Of equal significance are the emerging emotions being shared about our massively transformed political culture and our changing conceptions of collective identity as a naturalized global culture is reformed and replaced by virtual connections and observations.
This workshop and seminar investigates and discusses the new (mediated) emotional world that we now inhabit and how it transforms ourselves and our connection to others. It will be led and moderated by three scholars who have explored networked emotion from different perspectives in their research:
Professor Andrew McStay Bangor University, author of Emotional AI: The Rise of Empathic Media (2018) among many other related works and projects.
Professor Vian Bakir, Bangor University, author of numerous articles on affective politics in digital culture and the era of disinformation in political communication along with many co-authored works and projects on empathic media.
Professor P David Marshall, Deakin University, author of major works related to the public personality system in contemporary and online culture as well as the co-author of Persona Studies (2020).
The workshop will begin with three 5-minute presentations by our three moderators. It will then continue with discussions and questions related to mediated emotion in the age of COVID-19 pandemic from all our invited participants.
A Global Digital Publics Network (GDPN) event in collaboration with the Emotional AI Lab, the network for Media & Persuasive Communication, Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalization and the Fame and Persona Research Consortium.
