UN Committee on the Rights of the Child adopts General Comment 25 on children’s rights in relation to the digital environment
On February 4th 2021 the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child adopted General Comment 25 on children’s rights in relation to the digital environment. As Prof. Sonia Livingstone explains, ‘it’s a game changer’ in that the General Comment ’will land on the desk of every government in the world,’ with each being duty-bound to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
From the point of view of the Lab, we’re thrilled. We submitted an extended Comment on the need to recognise that profiling of children’s emotional life is profoundly problematic. Sections 17, 63 and 64 of General Comment 25 seem to have taken this onboard.
For sure, this is not the end, but it’s an excellent start!
